Harmony Haven National Trust is growing, and we believe people should be able to understand what we are building, where we are in the process, and how they can participate.

Below are answers to some of the questions we receive most often.

WHAT IS HARMONY HAVEN NATIONAL TRUST?

Harmony Haven National Trust, or HHNT, is a Washington-based charitable organization developing dignity-centered approaches to homelessness, housing instability, youth support, family stabilization, food insecurity, child welfare, and long-term systems reform.

Our goal is to connect services that are often separated and create pathways from:

PREVENTION → STABILIZATION → OPPORTUNITY → INDEPENDENCE → COMMUNITY

IS HARMONY HAVEN CURRENTLY OPERATING ALL OF THE PROGRAMS DESCRIBED ON THIS WEBSITE?

No.

Harmony Haven is currently in the development and capacity-building stage.

The programs described throughout this website are at different stages.

Some are near-term priorities currently being developed.

Others are longer-term concepts requiring significant funding, facilities, partnerships, professional staffing, licensing, regulatory compliance, or other infrastructure before they can operate.

We believe it is important to clearly distinguish between:

What we have already done.

What we are currently doing.

What we are preparing to do next.

And what we are ultimately working toward.

WHAT IS SUBTERRA?

Subterra is Harmony Haven's developing adult stabilization and transitional housing model.

It is intended to create a bridge between homelessness and permanent stability.

The model is being developed around practical realities that can create barriers within traditional shelter systems, including relationships, companion animals, personal belongings, employment schedules, healthcare needs, and the need for consistent 24-hour stability.

Subterra is not intended to become permanent housing.

The goal is to provide enough stability for people to begin moving toward it.

IS SUBTERRA AN UNDERGROUND FACILITY?

No.

Despite the name, Subterra is not a proposal to house people underground.

Subterra is the name of Harmony Haven's adult stabilization and transitional housing model.

Individual locations would depend on available properties, funding, community needs, zoning, safety requirements, and other applicable regulations.

No secret mole civilization is involved. We promise. 😂

WHAT ARE HARMONY HAVEN SANCTUARIES?

Sanctuaries are part of Harmony Haven's long-term child-centered vision.

They are envisioned as stable, home-like environments designed around safety, education, healing, continuity, development, healthy relationships, preparation for adulthood, and belonging.

The Sanctuary concept was the original foundation from which Harmony Haven grew.

It remains a long-term priority, but developing residential services for children requires substantial professional, regulatory, financial, and physical infrastructure.

Harmony Haven will not represent a Sanctuary as operational until those requirements have been met.

DOES HARMONY HAVEN REPLACE FOSTER CARE OR CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES?

No.

Harmony Haven does not have the authority to replace state child-welfare agencies, courts, licensed foster-care systems, or other legally authorized entities.

Our long-term work includes developing supportive models for children and families and advocating for improvements within child-welfare systems.

Any future residential services involving children would operate only with the appropriate licensing, professional oversight, legal authority, safeguards, and regulatory compliance.

WHAT DOES “DIGNITY-FIRST” MEAN?

Dignity-first means recognizing that experiencing poverty, homelessness, trauma, or instability does not erase someone's humanity.

We believe support should preserve as much choice, privacy, autonomy, connection, and respect as reasonably possible.

It also means paying attention to practical details.

People have relationships.

People have animals they love.

People have belongings.

People have preferences.

People have different needs.

And people should have meaningful participation in decisions affecting their lives whenever possible.

Dignity is not something people should have to earn back after experiencing hardship.

WHY DOES HARMONY HAVEN SUPPORT COUPLES AND PEOPLE WITH PETS?

Because relationships and companion animals can be important parts of a person's support system.

For someone experiencing homelessness, a partner or animal may represent family, emotional support, safety, continuity, and one of the few stable relationships remaining in their life.

We believe programs should avoid forcing unnecessary separation whenever safety, available facilities, funding, and applicable rules allow people to remain together.

Specific accommodations will ultimately depend on the program and facility.

DOES EVERYONE RECEIVE EVERY HARMONY HAVEN SERVICE?

No.

An integrated system does not mean putting everyone into every program.

It means making different pathways available for different needs.

Someone who needs food may only need food.

A teenager may only need somewhere safe to spend several hours and help accessing resources.

A family may need short-term stabilization.

Someone experiencing chronic homelessness may need a longer pathway.

WHAT IS THE DIGNITY FOOD HUB?

The Dignity Food Hub is a developing Harmony Haven concept focused on providing food and essential resources with quality, choice, accessibility, and respect.

The model may eventually include fresh and shelf-stable food, produce, meal ingredients, ready-to-eat options, hygiene products, household essentials, pet supplies, and connections to other resources.

The goal is not simply to distribute things.

It is to provide useful resources in a way that respects the people receiving them.

WHAT IS DIGNITY-FIRST PROVISIONING?

Dignity-first provisioning addresses the practical items that can make the difference between having an opportunity and being unable to use it.

Examples may include:

• Work clothing or shoes.

• Hygiene products.

• Bedding.

• Household supplies.

• Kitchen items.

• School supplies.

• Baby necessities.

• Weather protection.

• Pet supplies.

• Other practical essentials.

Our standard is simple:

We should be willing to use what we give to someone else.

WHAT IS THE DIGNITY DREAM CENTER?

The Dignity Dream Center is a developing concept for a centralized community hub where several Harmony Haven services and community partnerships could eventually operate together.

Depending on the property, funding, partnerships, licensing, and community needs, a future location could include youth services, food and essential resources, hygiene access, resource navigation, education and employment support, community space, visiting service providers, volunteer coordination, and administrative functions.

Harmony Haven does not currently represent the Dignity Dream Center as an operating facility.

WHY DOES HARMONY HAVEN WORK ON SO MANY DIFFERENT ISSUES?

Because the problems are connected.

Homelessness can affect employment.

Housing can affect family stability.

Food insecurity can affect education.

Transportation can affect healthcare.

Youth instability can become adult homelessness.

And a small problem left unresolved can become an enormous crisis.

Harmony Haven's model is intentionally broad because stability itself is interconnected.

That does not mean we intend to personally provide every possible service.

Whenever appropriate, we want to partner, refer, coordinate, and collaborate with organizations already doing good work.

IS HARMONY HAVEN A GOVERNMENT AGENCY?

No.

Harmony Haven National Trust is an independent charitable organization.

We may communicate, collaborate, advocate, or pursue partnerships with government agencies and public institutions, but HHNT is not a government agency.

IS HARMONY HAVEN A 501(c)(3)?

Harmony Haven National Trust is a registered Washington charitable organization.

HHNT is working toward federal recognition as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Federal 501(c)(3) recognition has not yet been granted.

Our website will be updated when our federal tax-exempt status changes.

Donors should not rely on this website as tax advice regarding the deductibility of a contribution.

CAN I DONATE?

Yes.

Harmony Haven welcomes appropriate financial and in-kind support as we build organizational capacity and develop future programs.

Current needs may change as projects develop.

Support can potentially include:

• Household goods.

• Program equipment.

• Professional services.

• Fundraising assistance.

• Event support.

• Property or facility opportunities.

• Other appropriate in-kind contributions.

CAN BUSINESSES OR ORGANIZATIONS PARTNER WITH HARMONY HAVEN?

Absolutely.

Harmony Haven is interested in building relationships with:

• Educational institutions.

• Healthcare providers.

• Housing organizations.

• Food and supply partners.

• Skilled professionals.

We believe collaboration is stronger than unnecessary duplication.

CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Harmony Haven is developing volunteer opportunities as programs and fundraising activities grow.

Needs may include event support, fundraising, outreach, donation coordination, professional expertise, administrative assistance, skilled services, and future program support.

Available opportunities will depend on the project and, where applicable, screening, training, insurance, licensing, or other safety requirements.

CAN I REFER SOMEONE TO HARMONY HAVEN FOR HOUSING OR SERVICES RIGHT NOW?

Not at this time unless Harmony Haven specifically announces an active service, event, or referral opportunity.

Our major direct-service programs are still being developed.

We do not want someone in immediate need to delay seeking currently available assistance because they believe a future Harmony Haven program is already operating.

As services become available, we will publish clear information about eligibility, availability, referrals, and how to access them.

WHERE WILL HARMONY HAVEN OPERATE?

Harmony Haven is based in Washington and is currently focusing its early development work there.

Our long-term vision is larger.

If programs demonstrate strong outcomes and can be implemented responsibly, we hope elements of the Harmony Haven model can eventually be adapted in other communities.

HOW WILL HARMONY HAVEN KNOW WHETHER ITS PROGRAMS WORK?

We believe programs should eventually be evaluated by outcomes rather than good intentions alone.

Depending on the program, measures may include:

• Housing stability.

• Returns to homelessness.

• Educational progress.

• Employment and income stability.

• Family stability.

• Youth engagement.

• Successful transitions into adulthood.

• Access to essential resources.

• Progress toward individual goals.

• Long-term independence.

• Participant experience, safety, choice, and dignity.

If evidence shows that something is not working, the responsible response is to learn from it and improve it.
